My youngest brother is many things. For Halloween, he was a dragon one day, with a stuffed pantyhose tail and aluminum foil spikes, and a lizard the next, wearing a sparkly green acrobatics costume from dance recitals past. On normal days, he’s a sweet-faced demon determined to make me miserable. And now, they tell me, he’s going to be a rooster (insert obligatory “They told me I could be anything so I became a rooster” meme here).
At the tender age of three and three-quarters, my brother has already morphed through a more diverse range of species than most birders witness in their lifetimes (and 97% of statistics are made up). You may wonder why this is. And I would regale you with an intense tale of gender roles and the arts, of belonging and passions. Why keep that lovely scenario in the hypothetical? That’s what I’m asking!

My family dances. I started pretty late with hip hop when I was eight, but my first brother began his short-lived acrobatics career at the age of five. Both of us were born with the rhythm of a dancer in our veins -- I danced along to the whirrs of a printer as a child, and we now battle along to hip hop beats and Kpop together. Then came the third child, and tried as he did to find his inner rhythm, all it resulted in was pain for the family watching.
Despite his natural limitations, my youngest brother came to dance one summer day and I let him try out a pair of tap shoes in the lost and found. He delighted in the unwieldy clicks and slams that came from the metal plates, and we figured that it was time for the youngest lime to have a chance in the dancing scene. We enrolled him in the only class available for three-year-olds: Fairytale Ballet and Tap. As the name might imply, the class was filled with wispy, blonde-haired, pink-clad girls with lovely big eyes and the most charming smiles. And then there was my brother, in all of his manly, dark-haired, small-eyed glory.
Now, he's going to be a rooster, and I have been enlisted to create his headpiece. He doesn't seem to realize that he's the only one not wearing a leotard during class, but he just might notice that he's not wearing a frilly chicken costume once showtime comes around. I have faith in his versatility to crow among the squawks.
In case you were wondering what my little master actually looks like, here he is, in more or less the order of the limes above (other than the rooster, for obvious reasons). And here are some extras I found while flipping through my paparazzi collection. Honestly, I think my brother is the cutest and I hope he never changes. But apparently that's not going to happen anytime soon.

I wish I had rhythm :(
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it is true that little brothers are adorable. It's awesome that you guys all have an extracurricular in common. My siblings and I have nothing... maybe we should take up... underwater basket weaving or something. Who knows. Great post as usual; the art is beauteous and green and hilarious :3

ReplyDeleteYour brother is the second cutest child I have ever seen! (the first being my own four year old brother.) I love the picture where he is looking through the pretzel... German pretzels are the BEST PRETZELS EVER :)
ReplyDeleteYour brother sounds so adorable and funny. Young kids have such an imagination, like how he thinks he will be a rooster. Once when I asked my brother what he wanted to be he said "I'm going to be a JEDI!"
Oh my gosh so not appropriate, but the picture with Cleve and your brother reminded me of the most commonly uttered phrase that day: "DON'T BE AN AUNT HELEN"
ReplyDeleteDying. Dying.
The picture of your brother in the dinosaur suit killed me with its adorableness. In fact it was so adorable I think my computer's battery somehow drained from 50% to 4% (mad dive with power charge to outlet ensues)
I wish Michael was this adorable. HMPH.
This was so cute! Your little brother is one of the most adorable small humans I've ever met. This ind of reminds me of my own family -- I did ballet, and then my little brother decided to do it too. Admittedly, he got kicked out because he was too rambunctious, but he was one of the only boys in his class.
ReplyDeleteOn one last night, I love your brother's costumes, they are incredibly cute!
Omigosh your brother as a dragon that is so adorable you have no idea.
ReplyDeleteHow are you making the costumes? I've always had trouble making wings in general, and feathers are just troublesome.
Wow I really want to see you dance to the beat of a printer. That sounds radical.
ReplyDeleteI wish my parents had enrolled me in dance classes when I was a baby. Maybe I could have grown up with more talent and grace. On the other hand, I doubt I could have gotten good at dancing anyways.
I feel like your brother could become a Korean pop star. He's already got the swag. He just needs to dye his hair blonde and wear lots of eyeliner.
I wish I could've participated in Halloween this year. Your post reminds me of the youthful days that seem to be going away, with the end of high school for me now. Although I don't know what I would've dressed up as, I wanted to at least trick-or-treat. Your brother sounds so cute... I took hip-hop classes at 8, too! I did not know that... Then how come you don't dance in the school dances? Show us your moves... :D This is probably my favorite blog post drawing ever. Great post, as always!
ReplyDeleteI love that your family can dance! You could start a little troupe together. The Limes Dance Squad or something. Also, your brother is so adorable!!!!! And don't worry, I'm sure he'll never change, at least in your eyes. Mine is already seven but I still think he's two. Is it even possible to ever stop thinking of a baby brother as anything older than the little baby you first saw? Limelicious post!
ReplyDeleteCute pictures! I still want some video of you (and your siblings!) dancing.
ReplyDeleteHe is so cute!!! :D As are your drawings! I love them in every post. They are really cute and add a lot to the blog.
ReplyDeleteI also think it's cool that all of your family can dance! My family has the same thing, but with music. We all play at least one instrument - even my tone-deaf dad. The other day, we were in the car and I commented on the witty rhymes of a song. We all immediately started singing it.
Again, your brother is incredibly cute! I hope he never changes too!
Your brother sounds very fun to be around. When I was about his age, I took dance lessons, but I didn't take them willingly. They were tap I think. I absolutely hated it. I think I only lasted about two weeks. I'm impressed that your brother sounds like he truly enjoys taking them. I'm curious what other interests he'll take up as he gets older.
